Things to do in Skipton

Skipton Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisonedSkipton is an incredibly beautiful and traditional market town which still hosts markets during the week, and boasts Skipton Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was once imprisoned.

Known as “The Gateway to the Dales” Skipton is only a 7 mile drive from our holiday cottages and is a pretty town to walk around.

At the head of Skipton High Street stands  Skipton Castle which is over 900 years old and is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England.

The High Street is home to the famous outdoor market with its many varied and interesting stalls.  Craven Court in Skipton is an attractive Victorian style shopping centre and from here visitors can wander down the many alleyways to savour the towns ancient history and character.

Also, well worth a visit is the canal area which offers boat trips on the Leeds to Liverpool canal, a marina, footpaths and picnic areas.

Along the canal, at the back of Skipton Castle, are the remains of an incline which were a technical innovation of their day, similar to Hayes incline at Ironbridge although on a much smaller scale.

A short drive from Skipton is the famous Yorkshire Dales with its amazing scenic features such as Kilnsey Crag,  Malham Cove and the Ribblehead Viaduct.

The Yorkshire dales is prime walking country with gentle walks or more energetic walks in the Three Peaks area of Penyghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

Underground, visit caves at White Scar and Stump Cross or for the experienced caver there are miles of underground passages to explore.
